ending a lease
My lease expired July 31, 2002. I did not renew but gave 30 day notice on July 30th of my intent to vacate August 31, 2002. During August a friend stayed in my spare bedroom as a guest, and when the Landlord discovered this she sent me a letter stating the rent for August would be an additional $100 to cover water and garbage expenses. She is now trying to deduct that amount from my security deposit before sending it to me. My lease says only I can inhabit the apartment, but it doesn't say I can't have guests. Can she increase my rent by an arbitrary amount and then try to compensate herself from my security deposit?
