In order to qualify for a homestead exemption you must be the owner of the property as of January 1 of that calendar year. If you purchased after January 1 and the previous owner had the homestead exemption, it generally carries over to you for that calendar year. You must file and application by March 1, 2008, in order to received the exemption for 2008.

You can read more about homestead exemptions on the website of the Dade County Property Appraiser at: http://www.co.miami-dade.fl.us/pa/Exemptions/Homestead.asp

The application is can be downloaded at this address: http://www.co.miami-dade.fl.us/pa/sites.asp

Be sure to read what is required to be brought with you when you go to apply for the exemption and have the necessary proof with you.
