Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

I found a home I wanted to rent. Met with the owner on Dec 14th, 2013 and put a $500 deposit on the home for a move in date of Jan 1, 2014. We signed a lease starting Jan 1, 2014. On Dec 28, 2013 I recieved a call from the owner stating he has rethought the deposits and security and wanted more money. We stated we couldnt afford nor agreed to the funds he was now requiring. He also reposted the house that we signed the lease on back for rent between the time of Dec 14th and Dec 28th before we contacted one another. We asked for our money back. He said that was fine but he needed documentation that we would not take pocession of the home. We have mailed 3 letters to the P.O. box (his business addresss) and everytime he fails to recieve it. He is now avoiding our calls and told us if we want our money back to get an attorney. How can I go about getting my deposit back? thank you

Oblige him and hire an attorney. You sue on the contract which he failed to honor. Likely you will get attorney's fees as part of the small claims clase
