Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida
greedy neighbor
My son was horsing around with some friends and accidently
broke my neighbors mailbox. He promptly apoligized and
offered to buy the materials for a new one and install it (he
has had some experience with putting up posts with the Boy
Scouts) My neighbor declined, said he would take care of it
and bill us for the new box. The box was a standard pre-fab
post and box that we priced out at Home Depot for $35.00. A
few days later, we received a bill for $410.00 from him. He
had a contractor come out and build him a new one of much
better quality than the one my son broke. Not only that, but
the materials the contractor used were billed to use for
$165.00, and when we priced out the lumber and mailbox,
they came to no more than $50.00 for the materials, The
neighbor, I'm sure, has grossly inflated the bill, but says if we
don't pay him the full amount, he will sue us. We were willing
to pay replacement value, but this is rediculous. What are my
options?

Re: greedy neighbor
Call his bluff or pay the man.
Re: greedy neighbor
I think you should call his bluff. Send him a check for the amount you think you owe. If he cashes it, you're done. If he sends it back, let him sue you. No judge is going to let him rip you off.
