Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

Guarianship of friend with no family

I have been taking care of my friend since August, taking him into my house, and basically taking full time care of him at my expense. I have been waiting to hear on SSD. He has had a servere head injury and is complete denial. The other day I gave him 100.00 which he gambled all, and then denied it. He as severe anger mamagement issues, and thinks he can go back to work as an 18 wheel driver, contrary to his doctor's opinion. His doctor has said he will pull his Class A License. He has convinced himself he is never wrong (all part of his 8 skull fractures, and I am at my wits' end as to what to do. Now he will be getting an 11,000.00 settlement and I am afraid he will burn through it in a week, he has promised strangers, and neighbors all sorts of things that he intends to buy for them. How can I curtail this, and get his the psychiatric help he needs. Because I am his primary care giver, he spends the day screaming at me. Please advise how I can get some sort of guardianship of him to save him from himself. Additionally, it seems like forever, and has gotten no answer from SSD.

Thank you.

Re: Guarianship of friend with no family

You should seek the advice of a lawyer regarding this guardianship. It's not something you should try on your own. Guardianship actions filed by relatives can be difficult, but guardianships filed by non-relatives can be extremely complex.

Also remember that no good deed goes unpunished. You'd be surprised at the number of criminal prosecutions that arise from people trying to help others who then get accused of theft, even those that have established guardianships.
