Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida
I have not had homeowner's insurance because I could not afford it and I still owe on a mortgage. Do I have to have the insurance? Also, I have not had the insurance for a while and the mortgage co. says they will get insurance for me and charge me for the period I wasn't covered. Is that legal?

Yes, it is legal. You are required to carry insurance under the terms of your loan documents. Go get some insurance. You don't want your lender to buy insurance. It will be very expensive and will only insure the lender's interest, not yours.
