Are you obligated to uphold a rental lease if you are relocated due to your employment?

Yes.

Try to negotiate a compromise with the landlord. Perhaps finding a replacement tenant for the landlord will lead to the landlord agreeing to terminate the lease. Read the lease carefully to learn whether there are any escape provisions that may allow you to cancel it with a minor penalty (i.e., relinquishment of security deposit, payment of two months rent, etc.).
