Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida
owner has problems with condo association commandos
For 7 yrs, I've owned an apt in Broward, Fl.Before I rented the unit, the association gave me some problems which I ignored. Now, they started it again. First they denied my tenant because @ the interview they asked her who her roommate was and she answered first: my cousin and then she said he was the boyfriend. She was declined because of that. After that incident, I personally told them that my family was going to be moving in a couple of days. He explained they didnt need an approval from the assoc. only a to fill out an application with their personal info. So, I faxed it to them. Now, they want to fine me $1000 because they claim unauthorized people ocupying the unit w/o approval from them. In my opinion, this is discrimination because I'm latin. They are harrasing me. What can I do?

Re: owner has problems with condo association commandos
Based on the limited information you provided, I cannot provide you with any reliable and meaningful opinion on the issue of discrimination under the law. You might be right, you might be entirely mistaken, but without additional information and a face-to-face consultation, I cannot begin to guess. Have others of Latin origin experienced the same problems, and have those not of such persuasion experienced no problems? Condo associations tend to be a nightmare for many, regardless of their race, ethnic origin, religion, age, etc., so do not be too quick to assume that the problems arise because of your ethnicity, but it appears you should seek legal counsel. If you wish to speak regarding this matter, please call my office and I will gladly refer you to someone in Broward County who handles these types of cases. Good luck.
