Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

i recently broke lease due to fear of my familys safety. my neighbor gunned down another man at a local shopping plaza and numerous break ins. teens shooting my kids with pellet guns. i have one theft police report. now im being sued for the rest of the rent about 5000 dollars plus court fees. my girlfriend was served in my behalf ( i was not home) and nothing was signed. am i obligated to go to court? what should i do?
