Relocating

I have lived in Orlando for 1 year and 7 months and my apartment complex most recently has had sexual attacks in the area and months prior there was an incident with a guy masturbating in front of my children and I. I am terrified at night. I am a single mother of two girls and I have decided to transfer back to my home city, Miami, so I can live with my sister and her husband because I do not want to live in fear any more. I want to do this as soon as possible but my lease does not run out until January. I read over my lease and it is very general in regards of terms of termination of lease. WHat do I do?

Usually you will need to follow the terms of your lease. However, Landlords may not interfere with the uiet enjoyment of the tenant and have a duty to warn a tenant of dangers that they knew of or should have known, and may be responsible for providing adequate security.

Have you documented the episodes to your landlord in writing, have you called the police, has anyone else? When you say that you lived in fear, did you see any doctors, take any medication, see any psychologists or counselors?

The experiences you have mentioned without more are probably insufficient for you to break your lease. While you are responsible for the rent, the landlord must use reasonable efforts to rerent once you give him notice.
