renters rights

My refridgerator has been down since 9/4. My building manager says he can't get one until 9/10. Thats 7 day without a refrigerator. I've had to thow away lots of food, living with a cooler that I had to bring up 3 flights of stairs full of Ice because the elevator is out.

Should I expect some type of conpensation? And if so, what should I expect?

Not likely going to happen voluntarily if at all. Seven days seems a little long for a replacement fridge when there are appliance stores everywhere. However, it may not be an unreasonable amount of time to have to wait for the new Fridge.

Check your lease to be certain, but most leases will not provide for compensation in this circumstance. You can always ask your landlord for some type of compensation for the amount of money you lost due to the spoiling food, though.

I would suggest that you approach your landlord in a professional manner and remind them that you have lost $xx of food due to the failure of the appliance. Then ask them if they will provide you with some fair amount of compensation, or even offset your rent slightly for the month.

Keep in mind, there may be no contractual or statutory obligation for them to compensate, but if they are good landlords and you approach it right you might see some relief.
