Renting a house

We are signing a lease and giving a security deposit to hold the house so no one else rent's it. We are told that we will get the keys to the house when we meet to give first month's rent. Is that normal?

There is no such thing as normal. Agreements can be different. The answser depends on your lease and the protections you have.
