Inheiritance Taxes vs. Real Estate Taxes?

Q. What does the law say about non-U.S. citizens taxes on jointly owned property when the U.S. member dies?

A. The law says you pay taxes. The question is which taxes are you referencing? Inheiritance or Real Estate. The real Estate Taxes will be a lien on the property and eventually the property will be sold to pay the taxes, if not paid. Inheiritance[survivor] taxes depend on the value of the deceased's estate and may or may not be involved. If they are due, then they are paid by the Estate of the deceased and the property may be sold to pay them, if necessary. You need to give more information to get a better answer. You should call Lawyers Referral for an appointment with an Atty. Your 1st 1/2 hour is generally very inexpensive. Where I practice, it is $25.00
