Will a short sale or foreclosure affect my social security benefits

No. They are not directly connected. But if a deficiency judgement, or any judgement occurs, once you receive social security payments, it is possible for a creditor to levy against your assets, like money you have in the bank that you deposited the check. I haven't heard it happening, but theory it's possible.
