Legal Question in Social Security Law in Florida

After a lengthy battle, which included a hearing before an ALJ, I was recently granted a fully favorable ruling for SSI. I did not have enough work credits to also receive SSDI.

I do not yet know what my monthly benefit will be, but I have already received the first of three back pay installments. Is there any way in which I am *not* allowed to spend these particular funds?

To clarify my concerns ... I am only 25, and I am 90% bedridden, with no prospects for a cure. I'm aware that SSI is a needs-based program, but it is also my only income. Purchases of things like books would help me mentally, as it's not good to focus on my considerable pain, but they aren't *needed* for live. So, I worry that there may be no leeway in spending the back pay for anything other than absolute survival, if that makes sense.

I really don't think you will need to worry. You should contact Social Security and get the needed information from them. HOwever, the first $20.00 of your monthly income is not counted against you for necessities. However, being bedridden your necessities could amount to most anything including but not limited to special equipment ie tv, computer, mechanical bed, wheelchairs etc.
