Legal Question in Social Security Law in Florida

Qualifying dependents for people on ssd

I have had custody of my Step niece for almost 5 yrs now and i have been on ssd for 10 yrs. Both of her parents have not had parental rights terminated but thru the court system i have legal custody and named her ''long term non relative caregiver''. I do not qualify for relative care benefits because she is my ''Step Niece''. The only thing she qualifies for is medicaid. I was wondering if she would qualify as my legal dependent and therefore recieve benefits thru my ssd? There is so many things she would qualify for if she was a relative but since she is my step niece i cant get any assistance to help with her care. So would we qualify for additional money since i am disabled and on ssd? Thank you for your assistance.

Re: Qualifying dependents for people on ssd

You can always apply, and see what Social Security says, but since you have not adopted her, it's likely benefits will be denied.
