Legal Question in Tax Law in Florida

Liens and Taxes who is responsible

My husband of 32 years sent another business down the tubes, got $26,000 when his sister died and he took off to another state to syart another venture. Now I find that there are several liens on my house [my mother gave me $10,000 as a downpayment, and the house is in my name. Two are State Tax liens and one is IRS and all are related to his businesses. Why can they put liens on my house- he insists that the liens are on him, not the house. What do I do?

Re: Liens and Taxes who is responsible

You are in a common law property state. That means if the taxes arose from income taxes filed as a joint return then the lien would apply to your property. If they are taxes that belong to your husband then the lien won't attach to your property. In Florida, you don't have an income tax but you have an intangible property tax which could be a joint return. Since you don't state the source of the tax the answer can't be answered with certainty.
