Legal Question in Tax Law in Florida

sale of house not reported
My father purchased a house in September 1978 and sold it in February 1980 profitting $8100. Meanwhile, he purchased a house in January 1980. He never declared the sale on his federal tax return. Should he contact the IRS now or contact a lawyer first for advice?
