If I am a student and I earn under $25,000 annually, do I still need to pay federal income tax? I understand that I need to file, but wouldn't I just receive it all back? And in general, isn't the forst $25000 of anyone's income tax exempt unless they are subject to alternative minimum tax?

Advice: go online to the IRS and other sites and check out your tax liability or filing advisability without charge. If you have any tax withholding on W-2, 1099, etc, you should file.
