I worked for a small business and was paid cash weekly- I no longer work there and requested a total of wages earned- my response was that I will be getting a 1099. Is that legal when I worked for 5 an hour and don't I have to sign a contract to be paid like an independent contractor? What can I do if anything?

I think you were an employee as you were paid weekly by the same company-this usually fits the employee role and as such your employer should have wit held taxes -if you earned $5 an hour and this violates the minimum wage laws in most cases. If you need legal help e-mail me a one page or less description of your situation and how to contact you.
