Legal Question in Traffic Law in Florida

Thank you for accepting my question concerning a traffic violation. Whilst living in Fort Lauderdale, FL I was recently pulled over due to expired plates and registration. My parents(Texas residents) own the vehicle and I am listed on the insurance. The officer told me that since it was more than six months expired that I could face jail time at my appointed court date. I updated the registration in Texas within the week, but I'm concerned for my court appearance. I was told this is a jailable offence by the officer.

How likely is a Florida judge to give jail time for this offense to a young college graduate with a spotless record? I don't even have a speeding ticket in Florida. Should I expect a fine or should I hire an attorney to avoid a likely jail sentence?

You are not likely to be jailed at all, unless you have some terrible record and the circumsatnces of the stop are bad. The fact you updated the registration may get the case dismissed. Go to court, bring proof of the registration, explain to the prosecutor your situation, and request they dismiss the charges.
