Was your driver's license valid? If not, then you face a criminal charge, punishable by up to 60 days jail. If it was for not carrying the license, then it is a non-criminal infraction punishable by an adjudication of guilt (i.e., points) and a $500 fine. The expired tags can also be criminal, but assuming it is recently past due, then it is also an infraction, with a potential $500 fine. You should get an attorney because these can get messy.
