Yes, most states have a reciprocal agreement with each other and points do carry over but usually at one-half of the amount assessed in the other state. You would be best served by hiring an attorny in Florida to make an appearance on your behalf and try to either get the case dismissed or adjudication withheld in order to protect your driver's license and your livliehood.

I personally got insurance rating points for improper passing in Virginia that in NJ is a four-point ticket; but based upon the then practice of out-of-state moving infractions having only transferred two points to the NJ driving record, I merely paid the Virginia ticket. That plea later was used to put me into the NJ State funded insurance pool for two months. The rating point thing was new that year and allowed whatever NJ would asses as number of points to be assessed for rating points for a similar violation in NJ for the out-of-state violation. I got four rating points for the passing that TOOK TWO or so MONTHS TO POST IN NJ after I had paid the the VA ticket. The points stay for rating for three years from the date of posting. With an accident for which they paid out just $5 over the then $500 limit (NOW $1000), I accumulated 9 rating points. my rates in state funded pool were three times the regular rates for the two months that the four points took to expire (36 months total). I then was eligible to re-apply for insurance. I was definitely not expecting that surprise. Many states now exchange information with other states via compact. I believe that insurance companies pay other companies to search out-of-state records for infractions. I am now back with the old insurer at lower rates. Beware! I do believe that NJ DMV now MVC assessed only two points on my NJ record for all out-of-state moving violations. If you have a CDL, you are a professional driver and should consult with Florida counsel as to plea bargaining that is often done without a formal appearance. In NJ, we often do the work without the foreign resident needing to appear. Good luck!
