Subpoena to be a witness in a traffic accident case... is there a way to avoid it (legally)?

No, because you risk contempt. However, I rarely see judges enforce that and usually when a witness doesn't show up, the case is either continued or dismissed. I can't advise you to avoid a subpoena but I am merely telling you my experience.
