Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

Where to begin after death of parent???

My mother recently died in Fl and I am the

executor of the will. Where do I begin? She did

not have much money and very little property. She

was not very specific but I would like to split

everything with my brother. I am a bit lost now and

don't know where to begin. Can I close her

accounts? Do I need to go to a probate court?

How much does that usually cost? And what

about her creditors? How do I pay them oir do I

have to pay them?

Re: Where to begin after death of parent???

As the executor you must gather information about her estate such as the assets and the debts. Determine how the assets and debts are titled and take it from there. If she had any assets titled in her name alone, then you file a probate action. The probate does not necessarily have to be expensive since it all depends on what is being probated. I would be happy to discuss this further at no charge to you. We may even find out that probate is not necessary. Feel free to contact me for further guidance. If she lived in FL then she falls under FL law. Make an appointment with a Fl probate lawyer. Most lawyers do not charge for an initial consultation.
