Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

My Dad is a resident of Florida and owns a home which is his homestead. I understand that his home is protected from a Medicaid "spend down" if he should ever have to enter a nursing home facility for an extended time. However, if he entered a facility in a different state to be close to one of his children (MA, SC or CA) would his home still be protected?
