Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

My Dad is a resident of Florida and owns a homestead property. I understand that such property is protected from a "Medicaid spend down" should he ever have to enter a nursing facility for an extended period. Would this hold true, in other words, would the value of his home be protected if he was in a facility in another state to be close to his children such as CA, MA or SC?

The Medicaid people can give you this information with certaintity, but i believe it retains its protection, up to a $500,000 value.
