Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

dormant bank account

If I have a relative who had a small amount of money in a bank account when they died and there were no legal claims on the account, how do I go about getting the money? I have the death certificate. I have siblings who do not mind if I get the money. The relative died over 12 years ago. Its only about $3700 dollars.

After 7 years, bank accounts usually escheat to the State of Florida. You will have to file a claim with the State. It is highly likely that an estate may have to be filed and a personal representative appointed. The personal representative can then file a claim with the state and distribute the monies as agreed by the family members or by the court.
