Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

Filing on a Small Estate

My grandfather died in Orlando on 3/27/02. His wife and my mother predeceased him so I am the last living relative. MetLife is asking me to fill out a Small Estate document so that I can claim his $18,300 insurance policy. He has no other assets and did not leave a will. I paid his funeral expenses out of a small savings account that he had for that purpose and his medical bills were all paid for by seconday insurance and MediCare (or MedicaidI get them confused) so he has no outstanding bills. When I contacted the Florida Probate Court in Orange County they told me that the form is no longer in use but won't tell me what replaces it. Their advice is contact an attorney or go to a law library. I live in Alpharetta, GA so that is out of the question. What other form is there that will allow me to claim the insurance without costing me the $18,300 to claim $18,300? I do not have the personal funds to hire an attorney as my wife was recently laid off from Lucent and we are now living on my salary alone. It seems awfully complicated for such a small amount of money. Thanks very much for your help!
