How do I find out the status of a probated will? Six months have passed since I was informed I am a beneficiary, but do not know the name of the attorney handling the matter.

If you know the county where the probate is (which should be in the county where the decedent resided) you can go on line usually to find out information.

As a beneficiary in a probate proceeding, you should be receiving several items, such as certain notices and the Inventory.

The will should have been filed in the probate court in the county where the deceased last resided. Once filed with the court, it becomes public record. Generally, but not always, with the filing of the will is a Petition for Personal Representative. That document will list who the Personal Representative (Executor) is, if approved by the court. The document will also indicate the attorney for the Personal Representative. Should you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.
