My advice based on your described facts:
If your name is on the deed to real property such as a house and lot as a joint owner, it is not legally required that anyone contact you. Under the law of joint ownership, you have the right as a survivor to own the property in your name. You will be responsible for real estate taxes, but unless the estate goes to probate, there is no requirement that you receive any formal legal notice regarding ownership.
I suggest you go down to the property and be sure it is in good shape and perhaps rent it.
You probably should have the deed reviewed by a lawyer to confirm the situation before proceeding.
Assuming it is confirmed as jointly owned, then recording the death certificate will move it solely into your name.
However, there are several other possibilities, and it would be much easier to have it reviewed to know precisely the correct answer.
