Based on my understanding of the question, it is clear that a life estate terminates when the life of the owner of the life estate is terminated. If the life estate was granted to more than one person, the surviving person(s) continue to own a life estate. So long as any conditions attached to the life estate (taxes, maintenance, etc.) are complied with, the life estate continues so long as the person is alive and desires to have the life estate.
