Locating life insurance policies for deceased

A friend of mine recently passed away unexpectedly and her husband believes that she must have had life insurance policies the proceeds of which would be available to him upon her death. How would an individual go about verifying whether or not a deceased spouse actually had life insurance policies in effect at the time of her death?

Normally, if the insurance company learns of the death, it will contact the beneficiary. If he hasn't found anything looking through files, drawers, etc., your friend's husband can contact the last employer. Sometimes, life insurance is offered through work and they can give you the necessary information.
