Overriding Beneficiay Designations in a Will

Can beneficiary designations on insurance policies, mutual funds etc., be overriden / modified via a will?

Since an insurance beneficary is considered an asset passing outside the will, the beneficary listed on an insurance policy would typically be the beneficary.
