How does a life estate work for a married woman who never lived in the house in question, owns her own home elsewhere, didn't have anything to do with her now deceased husband, & the deceased son who lived in the house & is listed on the will to get the house, what are his options

I suggest you review the exact wording of the will. Sometimes they require the holder of the life estate to live there. As the holder of the life estate is technically responsible for upkeep and taxes she may consider a buyout.
