real estate and/or probate

My boyfriend's mom Quitclaimed her house to him and retained a life estate. Who is reaponsible for upkeep to the home? (There is a plumbing problem).

Usually the person holding the life estate is responsible for taxes and normal upkeep of the house. They would not normally have any responsibity improve the house. That said, and wondering if son paid anything to Mom for this valuable asset, I think this is an issue to be worked out between family members and not in a courthouse.
