Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

Spouse's Debts

I am married 34 years. My husband has health problems and it is very likely I will survive him. He has no estate to speak of. We don't own a home. Will I inherit his debt? He has a lot of old unresolved debts, which were not entered into jointly. Will I have to take on this burden? He has nothing to leave me by way of assets, except his life insurance from work, approx $50,000.00. I am concerend that in my old age I will be forced to either pay these debts or be hounded for the rest of my life by the owners of the debts. Some of these old debts were from old businesses that closed, some are personal. Thank you.

Re: Spouse's Debts

You are only responsible for your own debts and joint debts not those of your spouse.
