Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Florida

My wife had an unsecured personal loan from a "friend" of hers. The friend recently died and left no money for her funeral and legal expenses. Her lawyer is now threatening to sue my wife to recover the balance of the loan in order to pay his expenses and the funeral. Can he do this? Also, what is our recourse?

If your wife owed her friend money, then the debt becomes owed to the estate of the friend. Whether the estate can prove the terms of the loan is a different question.
