new wifes rights

my new husband made a will years ago w/distant relatives and friends as beneficiaries of everything, even retirement funds. what rights does a new wife have if a new will isn't made?

If the surviving will predates the new wife, she is labeled a "pretermitted spouse" and is entitled to take the same share that she would be entitled to under the intestacy statutes if a will didn't exist at all. Thats why its important to make a new will when there's a significant change in the familial make-up. (children/spouse/etc...)
