my father died recently and he did have a will,his companion gave me a paper that she wrote up and my father signed while in the hospital dying,it says that he wants her to have his house and car in the will half of the house was bequeathed to me.there were two friends that witnessed this.. Is it legal? thank you. S Brennan

The paper that his companion showed you is only legal on certain conditions and would be an amending codicil to the last will. It would need to be witnesses by two other people and notarized by an attorney or notary. If not, this is called a holographic will and generally has no effect in the state of New York unless your father was currently in the military over seas.
