Legal Question in Workers Comp in Florida

Employer liabilty/wrongful death

My brother was in a fishing accident and was lost at sea while workign on a shrimp boat. I was told by a family member that boat captains or owners are required to have insurance to cover such incidents however was told by the captain of the boat (via a third party) that this didnt exist. Are vessle owners required to have sometype of insurance on or for their crew?? IS there anytype of professioanal liabilty that a captian has for his crew?

Re: Employer liabilty/wrongful death

Your brother's estate may be entitled to damages under the Jones Act, the Death on the High Seas Act, and/or General Maritime law. What state was your brother fishing from, Georgia or Florida? If you want to give me a call to discuss the case, you can reach me at 404.529.9081.

Sincerely,

Your question pertains to admiralty law. Practicing admiralty attorneys are typically located at or near cities where ports are located, such as Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina. Hopefully this will assist you in finding an attorney to consult with.
