Legal Question in Family Law in France

Marrying Abroad

I have a friend who would like to know if she can get married in a church in France whilst a resident of the UK.

Does she have to take up residency for this to take place or not? They do not want a civil ceremony in a town hall or register office - only a church. They will do what is necessary to be able to do this.

Your advice would be most welcome. They wish to do this next year.

Re: Marrying Abroad

I see no reason why they could not have a church wedding in France if they fully understand that it will not be a valid marriage unless there is a corresponding civil ceremony. If they marry civilly in the UK and come to France for a church wedding, there would be no problem. They would be legally married under English law and that marriage would be recognized as valid in France and elsewhere.
