Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Georgia
Bankruptcy and Law School
I am recently divorced and suffered major financial set backs due to this. I am applying to law school for the fall of 2008. If I declare bankruptcy, can I still be an attorney and practice law? Will this hinder me in getting government student loans and other student loans as well?

You probably should call the General Counsel's office at the state bar to discuss the effects on a bar admission. As I understand it, a bankruptcy would not automatically prevent bar admission, but it might be used as evidence of character. You would do well to discuss it with that office.
Some student loans (not all) are dependent on credit history, and those might be affected by bankruptcy. Many others are not based on credit. This would be an area where you'd want to sit down with someone in the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend.

In addition to the other information, some employers may view filing for bankruptcy, then starting school, a negative character issue, if the alterntative is to delay school to pay off debt.
