how long can a chapter 7 bankruptcy go on, is there a statue of limitations where the court has to say it's over.

Most chapter 7s in the northern district of Georgia receive a discharge about 4-5 months after filing. Ones involving property or assets can be kept open by the Trustee to administer the case for as long as may be necessary. If your attorney feels the time is excessive he may in some (but not all) cases be able to push the case along, so call him.
