You stop a garnishment by paying the debt, agreeing on a payment plan with the other side (usually not likely), or by filing for bankruptcy. As for the question about hiring a lawyer (short of filing for bankruptcy), would it be better to spend that money paying down the actual debt rather than on a lawyer?
