Legal Question in Business Law in Georgia

If I refer clients to lawyers, and I am not a lawyer myself, can I receive referral fees? To be more specific, the issue has to do with class action, and my firm identified an issue brought forward to us by a client that we would like to forward to a class action lawyer. The corporation to be sued is a large corporation. Is there any way to get a referral fee without anyone getting disbarred or in trouble?

No, you cannot get a referral fee. State Bar of Georgia Formal Advisory Opinion No. 94-1 states, in part, "[a] lawyer shall not compensate or give anything of value to a person or organization...as a reward for having made a recommendation resulting in his [or her] employment by a client."

Best of luck.******The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege.*******

No, and in addition to what Phillip said, be very careful in what you tell your "client" in that what you tell him or her may be considered legal advice, and in giving such advice you could be committing a crime.
