Legal Question in Business Law in Georgia
Sign on bonus repayment
I left a job early that I had taken a
sign on bonus. I owe company A the
sign on bonus, however the company
has been bought out by company B.
They are asking me to pay company
B. I have already paid taxes on this
money. They say that they will ''key
in a reversal'' which will adjust this
year's taxes. My question is two fold.
1: Can a company that did not pay
me a bonus require me to pay it
back? 2: If so, will they be able to
adjust my w-2 even though I have
never been an employee of company
B?

Re: Sign on bonus repayment
Companies buy other companies (or their assets and/or liabilities) all the time, and that does not mean that people who owe the company that was purchased get out of the debt. No one here knows the details of your company. Ask your tax professional about your specific tax situation - presumably you can amend or adjust later tax years.
