Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Georgia
I asked a Question about a week ago and never recieved an answer, maybe I should go into more debth. I work for a company that sub-contracts to the apartment industry around Atlanta GA. Many of the properties want to hold my driver's license before they will let me work. They will not accept an ID provided by the company I work for, and expect me to drive around without it. In most cases the ID is placed in a folder and sat on a table where anyone could get my personal information. Is it legal for them to hold my drivers license for any reason? And if so, where can I get a copy of said law?

They want to hold your driver's license for personal safety reasons -- if you hurt someone or something while on their property, they want to know who you are. The reason they will not accept a company ID is that it is not government issued and anyone can create a "company ID" in this day and age.
With that said, you certainly have a right to request that they keep your information private. You also may consider making a bunch of photocopies of your government ID and hand that too them instead. That way, you don't have to drive around without your ID.
There is no law that allows or requires them to do this. It is a company policy. It's their property, so they get to make the rules. If you don't like the rules, I would complain to your employer, but it sounds like you are making much-ado about nothing.
Best of luck.******The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege.*******
