copyright infringement

i was recently trying to figure out how to burn a copy of a copyright protected dvd for my own personal use, i realize it's illegal to distribute such materials, but i don't know whether or not copying such a dvd is illegal. at any rate, i haven't done it yet, but i contacted a software company about such a matter, i haven't heard back yet. if i haven't made the copy yet, is there a law on the books about conspiring to copy a copyright protected dvd?

You can make a copy of your own DVD or CD for your own use, so long as you don't sell it and the original was purchased.
