Legal Question in Technology Law in Georgia

Downloading music from a computer

I was told that it is illegal to download songs played on the interet onto a disk for one's personal use, despite the many sites with lists of songs to play. Is this true and is there a way that I legally may download songs solely for listening in my car or home?

Thank you for any assistance.

Re: Downloading music from a computer

There are several sites where you can legally download music -- for a fee. Downloading music and not paying for it is like stealing a CD from a record store.

The fact that a website offers these recordings for free does not make it legal to download the music, because the owner of the web site very likely does not have permission from the copright holders to do what he is doing. A few artists have decided to make some of their music available at no cost, but the vast majority of what is offered on-line may not be legally copied.

The bottom line is that -- aside from those few recordings which the copyright holder has decided to give away -- you have to pay for for your music.
